About this Item

Description:

[13], 208 pp., 1 folding engraved map, contemporary panelled calf, slightly rubbed, map lightly soiled and shaved into neat line, some restoration at edges barely affecting image, title page restored at corner with partially erased library stamp, skilfully re-backed, otherwise a very good copy, printed for W. Mears. The work comprises of Part I: A journey from Aleppo to Damascus. Part II: Being an account of the Maronite nation inhabiting the mountains of Libanus and other parts of Syria, extracted from their own authors. Part III: The Surprising Adventures of Mostafa A Turk. First and apparently only edition. The dedication to William Fawkener is signed J.G. The dedicatee, Fawkener was a member of the Levant Company; his brother, Sir Everard Fawkener had lived in Aleppo, and in 1735 was made ambassador to Constantinople. Green has edited the work from several sources. Part I, the journey from Aleppo to Damascus, was communicated to him by a friend, and the map illustrates this route. The descriptions of Aleppo and Damascus are taken from Nouveau Memoires de Missions de la Compagnie de Jesus. Part II is a translation from De La Roque?s Voyage to Mt. Lebanon. Green was mainly known as geographer; apparently he also used the name Braddock Mead. In this work Green is much concerned with the effect on the Levant trade of the Russian-German attempt to dismember Turkey.
