Drawing on fifteen years of research, hundreds of interviews and some 300,000 declassified FBI and CIA documents, Evanzz argues that the intelligence community manipulated the feud between Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam in the months before the killing. The book follows Malcolm X's rise and the surveillance that shadowed him from the Nation of Islam years through his break w/ Elijah Muhammad. Evanzz then reconstructs the Audubon Ballroom shooting and the men around it. The trail he lays out points to rivals tied to the Nation of Islam's Newark mosque, w/ federal agents watching from the wings. Thunder's Mouth Press of New York issued the book in late 1992, as Spike Lee's film Malcolm X reopened public debate. Evanzz, a journalist, went on to write The Messenger, a 1999 life of Elijah Muhammad. The volume is illustrated w/ b&w photographs and closes w/ an index.…

While the authors of these two studies of the assassination of Malcolm X have examined the same primary source materials, they have arrived at opposite conclusions. Evanzz is a journalist who spent 15 years researching the case; Friedly is a researcher at the Martin Luther King Jr. Papers Project at Stanford University. Evanzz builds a strong case for the conspiracy theory, while Friedly gives it very little credence. Evanzz also delves more deeply into African American history and has interviewed over 200 individuals involved in the Black Power Movement. The "Judas" Evanzz refers to is John Ali, whom he concludes conspired with the CIA to assassinate his former friend. Friedly points out, however, that the New York City Police Department did a poor job of protecting Malcolm X and has yet to release its files of the case. Both authors clearly show that the CIA and FBI were concerned about Malcolm X's growing power, especially after he and Elijah Muhammad had gone their separate ways. The FBI was worried that Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were going to join forces, while the CIA was concerned about Malcolm X's visits to African leaders and what this might mean for American race relations. Since Evanzz and Friedly had access to more sources than previous authors, their studies add new insights into Malcolm X's life, death, and role in African American history. Both titles are essential for most libraries. Previewed in "Malcolm X: By Any Book Necessary," LJ 10/15/92.--Ed.

Shipping terms
DOMESTIC SHIPPING:
We offer a choice of media mail (when applicable), first class, priority and/or expedited whenever possible. Choices for shipping methods vary and will appear at checkout (as well as additional opportunities to purchase insurance, extra insurance, etc.). All domestic orders include tracking.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING:
International shipping has become increasingly complex, but we do our best to keep up. If you have any questions regarding shipping to your country, feel free to reach out before you order. We will do our best to give you an exact quote.
All international orders include tracking and insurance. Expedited orders generally ship via USPS, DHL or Priority Mail International depending on the destination. Consolidated shipping is usually via Asendia or a similar, reliable carrier.
**VAT, Fees & Taxes: **
Where your country requires, and when under the value threshold set by your country, VAT is collected at checkout and remitted by the marketplace you ordered through. Any additional fees, duties, or taxes your country or carrier charges upon arrival are the buyer's responsibility (collected by your postal service or carrier when the package is delivered). The one exception is the European Union (see below).
The European Union:
As of 2026, the EU has added a new customs duty on every parcel entering the Union. Because of this, we are now required to prepay all duty and customs (DDP) before shipping, which is why you may notice that our EU rates run significantly higher than other countries. Additionally, on orders over 150 Euros, the full VAT tax due, over and above €150, is most often not collected by marketplaces at checkout. We may contact you through the marketplace you ordered to collect these additional VAT fees before shipping.
Typical speeds:
Although customs and overseas carrier delays sometimes happen and are outside of our control, the following should be a good guide (Business days only). If you need it faster, feel free to reach out. Sometimes we can achieve the “almost” impossible :)
