Green binding, gold design and lettering, gilt to top edge, untrimmed fore-edge and bottom edge, with etching by H. Macbeth-Raeburn and a map of Wessex; 516 pages with Wessex map at end. Condition: Age wear, faint stains/soiling to binding, lower corners lightly turned in (bumped). Book slightly slanted due to leaning on bookshelf. Bookplate of previous owner on first endpaper pastedown; a tiny old sticker of bookstore on rear pastedown endpaper. Else, text is clean, clear, and very readable. Overall, Very Good. The story of Jude the Obscure began as a serial story in Harper's New Monthly Magazine (first as The Simpletons, later Hearts Insurgent) at the end of November 1894, and was continued in monthly parts. It was then published in book form in 1895, although the publisher's page indicates 1896. This is Hardy's last major work of fiction, also "one of his most gloomily fatalistic." It's about the lives of individuals who are caught by situations beyond their control. The novel explores several social problems in Victorian England, including marriage. The novel's bold frankness about sex took the readers off guard, perhaps shocked them. Hardy also presents the ambivalent and conflicting roles of religion in his life.
