Item description from seller

Slight mark to corner of front cloth. Very slight shelf wear to top edge of D/J. Introduced by Vera Lynn. This book takes us back to the days of the Second World War in Britain. Brimming with over 450 evocative pictures and 16 pages of full colour, it nostalgically recalls the war as seen on the Home Front from 1939 to 1945. Each section takes as its theme one of the songs of the war years - and the songs have a flavour of their own: they could not have been written at any other time. All aspects of Britain 'taking it' are included: the documents on which life seemed to depend in those days - ration books, identity cards and coupons of all kinds - cartoons, film stills, posters and advertisements, all of which reveal a wealth of indicental detail like fashions and hair-styles. Here too are photographs of the once familiar objects of the time - gas marks, tin hats, Woolton Pie, the National Wheatmeal Loaf and a host of others. Taken as a whole the book poignantly recreates the war-time spirit of Britain. Illustrated. 256 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Academic, Scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
