Add to basket1901 First Edition, first printing with the rhyming chapter headings for chapters VIII and XIII. Original green ribbed cloth binding with gilt lettering and a boat stamped in black on the front board and spine. Top page edges are gilt, other edges untrimmed. Wear to the head and heel of the spine; bumped corners; former owner's name neatly written on the flyleaf and dated 1902. Ten black and white photographic plates, including the frontis, of bas-relief sculptures by John Lockwood Kipling, the author's father. 8 ¼" x 5 ½" ; 460 pp. Pages are ivoried, clean and unmarked. Binding is strong. Doubleday, Page & Company of New York and Macmillan of London both published Kipling's novel in October 1901; the American edition was published on October 1, 1901, two weeks earlier than the UK edition's publication date of October 17, 1901.
