Add to basketSmall, Maynard and Company, Boston, 1904. First edition limited to 4,000 copies. 7.25" x 4.75" xv, 252. 11 pages of publisher's ads in back. Green cloth with front cover pictorial of Katahdin and 2 pine trees. Shows Amy Rand monogram at base. Top, fore, and bottom edges stained green to match cloth. Spine ends and corners show minimal shelf-wear. Slightest roll to spine, otherwise binding is square and tight. Text Block clean, free from markings, no indicia of ownership. Internally clean and tight. Frontispiece, a portrait of the author, is present and has intact tissue guard. With the cover designed and each of the six sections of stories preceded by a full page illustration by Amy Carol Rand in a style informed by Art Deco. The cover is stamped and colored in darker green and white with gilt titles. Some early versions or reprints of this work display a different cover. The title refers to Mt. Katahdin, beneath whose metaphorical shadow Mainers live. Born in Vassalboro, and a graduate of Colby College, Day wrote stories and poetry for numerous periodicals. He was also a working journalist and newspaper owner for a time. His stories purport to capture the diction, the occupations, and the sense of humor of the Pine Tree State.
