Handsome volume from The Sahib Edition of Rudyard Kipling, Collier's early 20th-century illustrated series reproducing Kipling's travel sketches, journalism, and shorter works. Undated, as typical for this edition, but consistent with Collier's c.1909 publication window and bearing all defining series characteristics: deep burgundy cloth, ornate gilt spine, decorative panel borders, tissue-guarded frontispiece photogravure, and the distinctive red and black border devices. This volume includes three mezzogravure plates by John Andrew & Son after drawings by W. Kirkpatrick. Bound in burgundy cloth with gilt swastika devices to spine compartments. An important feature of this series. These swastikas are entirely pre-Nazi in origin and represent the ancient Indo-Aryan 'sun symbol,' associated with good fortune, eternity, and auspiciousness across South Asia. Kipling used the symbol frequently before the 1930s to acknowledge his connection to India; Collier followed suit in decorative borders across the Sahib Edition. This symbol has no relation whatsoever to the later 20th-century distortion by the Nazi regime. Condition: Good only, sound but with flaws. The upper board shows a broad area of old moisture staining, visible again on the front endpapers with pinkish dye migration from the cloth. Internal text block largely unaffected beyond a light waviness at the beginning of the book. Rear endpapers clean. Gilt on spine bright and legible; cloth rubbed at spine tips but hinges remain secure. Tissue guard present and intact. All plates present, including the frontispiece. Pages clean, with mild age toning. No writing or bookplates. Edition notes: Part of Collier's Sahib Edition, not a first edition of the text (which originally appeared 1888-89), but an early and collectible illustrated American reissue intended as a uniform library set. These Collier printings are widely recognized for their production quality and for preserving Kipling's preferred Indian iconography, including the auspicious swastika.…
