Each leaf with a contemporary reader s mark, apparently an "f" (conceivably a long "s", or just an identifying squiggle), at the foot of each page, with circled corrections in the margins of pp. 6, 13, and the last page of publishers advertisements, also a few names completed in what may be a different hand. Attractively bound in calf-backed marbled boards antique, gilt spine label. First edition, a notable satire on the literary haut monde. Its main character, "BOCAJ," is none other than Kit-Cat founder and publisher Jacob Tonson, who organized the club to promote the Protestant succession, adding authors like Addison and Steele, Garth, Prior, Halifax, Congreve, and Vanbrugh. The name of the club came from the pastry cook Christopher Kat, at whose house the members often met. Foxon B257. The present copy s corrections may well be by a contemporary proof-reader, possibly in anticipation of a new edition which was likely abandoned when Henry Hills moved so quickly to produce a penny piracy, for which see the next item in this list.
