In recent years there has been increasing interest in building programs which rely on large stores of task-specific know-edge as a basis for high performance. The two case studies reported here explore the methodology and technology of designing, constructing. and operating such systems. Each of the two programs represents the foundation of a new sub-field of Artificial Intelligence. The first, called AM, deals with paradigms of mathematical discovery and scientific research, starting from a knowledge base of elementary set theory concepts and a number of heuristic rules for exploring them. Unlike previous research programs, AM is not a theorem-prover, but a theorem-proposer: its task is to discover, to infer. to "notice" new concepts built from older ones. This work has been guided by Douglas Lenat. The second program, TEIRESIAS, examines the problem of building and using knowledge-based systems, and the use of meta-level rules. It stud-les in particular the acquisition of knowledge from experts, techniques for adding that information to the knowledge base, and ways of controlling its use. TEIRESIAS demonstrates that it is possible to forge a direct link between an expert and a knowledge-based system, and to allow the expert to test, evaluate, and correct the performance of the system. It has been developed by Randall Davis. This book is unique in the literature of Artificial Intelligence. It presents an account of actual experience in program design, construction, and operation, and researchers will find its information and precise techniques quite valuable. It is also the first such volume in the fast-growing field of knowledge engineering, and quite readable at that, and will provide otherwise inaccessible information to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in Al. The Introduction, by E. A. Feigenbaum and B. G. Buchanan, sets the historical context for the two case studies and discusses the significance of the efforts of Davis and Lenat.
