Jack Kerouac's personal copy. Includes both ink and blind stamp from Kerouac Estate. Kerouac also makes small annotation writing an address to the title page. In Kulchur issue 3 (1961), Jack Kerouac contributes a piece titled "Dave," which transcribes the monologue of a junkie in Mexico City. The work is prefaced with a note stating that it was "Dictated to me in Mexico City 1952 by David Tercerero died November 1954." David Tercerero, also referred to as Tesorero, was a real person who appears in other works, including William Burroughs' novel Junkie as "Old Ike" and in Kerouac's Tristessa as "Dave," mentioned as Tristessa's former husband who had already died. In "Dave," Kerouac presents a first-person account of Tercerero's life from boyhood to young manhood, detailing a life marked by poverty, adversity, danger, and struggle. The narrative includes his experiences during the Mexican Revolution, his career as a thief on both sides of the border, his incarcerations, escapes, and morphine addiction. This piece exemplifies Kerouac's fascination with socially marginal figures and his preference for spontaneous, oral-style writing, showcasing the raw and unfiltered experiences of those living on the fringes of society.
