A hugely comprehensive analysis of 432pp of the many inventories of goods in Charles l's possession at his beheading in 1649. Also of catalogues of the goods to be sold after his death or following their dispersal. The recent remarkable exhibition at the Royal Academy in 2018 of paintings and art in the King's possession, was only a fraction of what was at the time one of the greatest princely collections in the world. This work gives a very thorough picture of the huge extent and quality of the collection of art and fine goods housed in the King's properties (nearly 30 great houses and Palaces - in fact rather slimmed down since Henry Vlll's time) to serve the Court of over 400 courtiers and the 500 or so functionaries who organised the Royal Household. With 71 plates and 115 figures. Some give in the spine from the weight of the quality starched paper. Rear panel of white dj faintly darkened. Scarce. Near fine in like dj.
