Greatbach was a famous engraver in 1820, throughout the Victorian era. In remarkable condition despite the age. The bindings look like they were bound in the 1800's. These bindings are custom bound. This set is extra illustrated. The leather is supple. The hinges are all sound. The paper is extremely high quality. Light shelf rubs. An exceptional set. Spines fully gilt decorated including Fleurs-de-Lis and Liberty Caps in compartments, raised bands, all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. In very good conditions. All volumes professionally rebacked using the original boards and original spines. Some only very minor rubbing to edges. In exceptional condition. All hinges sound and strong. Volumes One and Three has private hand written bookplate on front endpapers. (H le Platt St Croix 1957) Volume three small chip on front endpaper fore edge. Inside some light foxing, else generally clean & tight. Size 9 x 5.5 inches, complete in 5 vols. Extra Illustrated with 90 steel-engraved plates, including portraits of the famous generals, republican leaders, execution scenes, assassinations, etc., all beautifully engraved by GREATBACH around 20 Hand Coloured. Name sometimes spelled Greatbatch, but Greatbach was usual. Line engraver and illustrator, worked in London from 1820, engraved plates after old masters for popular almanacks; the PSA listed some of his works. Brother of engraver George Greatbach, he was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, and died in London. Complete with all 5 volumes. Previous owner bookplate on front endpaper from St. Croix. High quality paper is still supple. The leather is supple. Set is remarkably fresh and well preserved. This is a gorgeous set. It would make an excellent gift or addition to any fine library.
