Octavos, maroon cloth covers with gilt spine titles. Volume I: vi [4] + 504 pages. Volume II: [v] + 462 pages. Illustrated with frontispieces of Spring Rice at age 35 (photograph by Mathew B. Brady), in (Vol. I) and in 1914 (Vol. II), plus other portraits. Index in Vol. II. Some pages unopened. Scarce dust jackets have printing on spines but are otherwise blank. The dust jacket spines are tanned, and Vol. I has a tear in center. In a worn publisher's slipcase that is split along the bottom edge and missing part of the bottom side. Sir Cecil Arthur Spring Rice (27 February 1859 14 February 1918) was a British diplomat who served as British Ambassador to the United States from 1912 to 1918, as which he was responsible for the organization of British efforts to end American neutrality during the First World War.
