First U.S. edition, first printing. Pages age-toned lightly, binding a trifle shaken, very minor bruise at spine head, else nearly fine in jade cloth with gilt spine lettering; in a jacket that is age-darkened (especially to spine panel), lightly edgeworn, with shallow chip to upper front. More than four hundred letters and notes, only a few of which had previously appeared in print; memoir and notes by Gilbert, his long-time friend; chronology by Richard Ellmann; a few explanatory letters by others; photo, facsimiles, index. 437 pages.
