CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Up through Chancellorsville, the author served with his regiment, initially the 12th NY and later the 5th NY Infantry. From the Preface: After that battle some little duty as company and regimental clerk had brought me to the notice of the Ordnance Officer of the brigade who had me detailed as his clerk. I served under him for a few months, going with him to the division headquarters to which he was transferred. An officer of my regiment having been appointed Provost-Marshal of the Corps, I was detailed to duty as his clerk and served with him until the summer of 1864, when I was appointed chief clerk in the office of the Assistant Adjutant General of the Corps. He continued to serve until the end of the war. The Fifth Corps fought as part of the Army of the Potomac and was involved in all the major engagements from Bull Run to Petersburg. REFERENCES: DORN NY 178; COULTER 447: Beginning with March 1864, when he was preparing for Grant s campaign against Richmond, and continuing to the end of the war, Tilney had a diary and many letters which he had written from the field, and he wisely reproduces that material here. This portion has considerable merit as a description of the country and the pillaging, including literary raids which consisted in robbing the libraries of Virginia mansions, a practice he deplored. He gives a good description of the raid against the Weldon Railroad in December 1864; he also notes that by summer, 1864, considerable numbers of Confederate troops were deserting to the Federal lines. NEVINS I pg 169: The best part of this highly polished narrative treats of Grant s campaigns in Virginia; the author was an Englishman attached to V Corps headquarters. MULLINS/REED #239.
