About this Item
AS PICTURED : First Edition Thus, September MCMXXVIII (i.e. The Pegasus Press re-issue of the First Edition, published by Jonathan Cape, LONDON, July MCMXXVIII, Second Impression, August MCMXXVIII). Originally issued with a print run of only 1500 copies, public interest and notoriety prompted an early second impression, soon followed by denigration, suppression, Trial and Banning in England - where it could not be legally printed until as late as 1949. The Pegasus Press in Paris had acquired printing rights from Cape within weeks of publication, and early copies of this edition found their way to England for the novel to be more widely, albeit illegally read. Brave and groundbreaking within the moral and social conventions of the day ( Lesbianism referred to as 'Inversion', psychologically abnormal) now an essential inclusion in 20th Century studies across English Literature, LGBTQ concerns, Women's Issues, Psychology, Censorship &etc. A major work. An uncommonly tight, bright, square copy with no markings or inscriptions and minimal indeed evidence of use. Entirely Foxing-free. A small French price in light pencil to ffep (easily erasable, if so wished). In the original dustwrapper, unchanged in design from the first impression, with 'Press Notices' to rear foldover. Foldover corners all trimmed after style of the time. Some pale pencilling in French to top leading corner. Some age/handling toning generally, spine more so, with light wear, nicks and chips chiefly at top edge. Overall, a superb copy in SCARCE Dustwrapper. Now protected with clear, removable sleeve. Further details/images readily available on request. FREE P&P IN UK. Shipping quoted for non-UK customers prior to purchasing. (25% proceeds to the Motor Neurone Disease Association).
