This early set of The Lord of the Rings, J R R Tolkien, published by George Allen and Unwin, London, are early impressions after the first editions, as follows: The Fellowship of the Ring - 1st Ed, Thirteenth Impression 1963 The Two Towers - 1st Ed, Tenth Impression1963 The Return of the King - 1st Ed, Tenth Impression1963. They come in a lovely custom-made clamshell box in red quarter leather. Each volume is custom-bound to high specification in full red calf with the eye in the ring motif that appeared on the dustwrappers of the 1st editions on the front boards, with single line gilt frame. The spines have gilt compartments and raised bands, with gilt stamped black labels. All edges gilt. Attractive marbled endpapers to each, with inner dentelles around edges. Internally the books are EXCEPTIONALLY clean. The creamy paper shows no blemishes. The maps are very bright and clean indeed. The Fellowship's map has a small open tear where it is pasted to the sheet, and I wonder if this was a flaw when the sheet when through the printer in the 60s. There is also a small (2mm) tear along the crease on The Two Towers, which is a common effect when the map is opened for the first time. The bindings are tight, clean, open easily and are expertly done. A really fine set. What's nice about these is they are all from the same year - 1963 - and will also thus make a great present for someone where 1963 is important - a wedding, birthday or anniversary of some sort. It's a lovely set. Shipping free worldwide. With the prices of first edition first impression sets becoming increasingly unattainable (the last first edition, first impression set I sold went for £30,000, and I do have another at the same price), this is a beautiful, high quality alternative for someone seeking a finely bound first edition set, in more affordable later impression.
