About this Item
AGATHA CHRISTIE - THE LABORS OF HERCULES (published in the UK as "The Labours of Hercules"), published by Collins Canada, copyright 1947, First (and only) Printing (no references to subsequent printings on copyright page - there was never a 2nd printing), white tiny diamond patterned endpapers, light grey cloth boards with dark green to spine and front panel, $2.50 price on DJ front flap. UNTIL 1945 DODD MEAD PUBLISHED THE CANADIAN EDITION THAT WAS IDENTICAL TO THE U.S. EDITION BUT IT SAID PUBLISHED IN CANADA ON THE COPYRIGHT PAGE. IN 1949 (STARTING WITH CROOKED HOUSE) COLLINS EXPORTED U.K. EDITIONS (UNPRICED) TO CANADA (LIKE IT DID TO AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND). BUT BECAUSE OF POST-WWII PAPER RESTRICTIONS IN THE U.K., COLLINS COULD NOT PRINT AGATHA CHRISTIE BOOKS FOR THE CANADIAN MARKET. AS A RESULT 3 BOOKS (HOLLOW, LABORS OF HERCULES, & TAKEN AT THE FLOOD) WERE PRINTED BY DODD MEAD (SO THE BOOKS LOOK LIKE U.S. EDITIONS) BUT THE PUBLISHER IS ACTUALLY COLLINS ON THE DJ & BOOK SPINE & TITLE/COPYRIGHT PAGES. THESE 3 "COLLINS CANADA" BOOKS ARE VERY VERY SCARCE. Book has no creased page corners, no former ownership markings or used bookstore stamps inside, no foxing to pages or endpapers or outer page edges, black top stain has no drop spots or fading, outer page edges are white (virtually no dust soiling/age darkening), clean endpapers with no soiling or staining, no splitting to internal hinges, no spine lean, no wear to board edges or board corners or to spine tips, no spine sun fading/darkening, no rubbing to spine lettering, no handling/dust soiling to boards, no soiling or discoloration to boards, no bumped board corners. Dust jacket has sliver loss at top of spine otherwise no tearing, chipping or creasing, hint of wear to spine tips, virtually no wear to front flap crease, virtually no edge wear, no spine sun fading, almost no color rubbing to front panel which is very nice, hint of dust rubbing to white rear panel, no soiling or staining. Overall a N-FINE book in FINE-/N-FINE condition dust jacket (not price clipped) of a rare 1940s era Agatha Christie 1st Collins Canada printing. I have a number of other U.K. and U.S. Agatha Christie 1st printing hardcover books up for sale.
