During the first year of the project the historical research had two focii. These were: (1) the examination of the narrative historical records pertaining to the fur trade of the Athabasca region from initial contact to 1821-22 and (2) the search for quantitative data dealing with material culture of the fur trade of the Peace River area in general and that of Ft. St. John in particular. The objectives of this work have been: (1) To obtain a clear picture of the nature of land-based fur trade of the Northwest just prior to the expansion up the Peace River. (2) To obtain some idea of the ways in which the early Peace River trade (pre-1822) was similar to and different from that of the Athabasca/Mackenzie district as a whole. (3) To provide some basic data for the archaeology crews about the material aspects of the trade at Ft. St. John before to they begin excavations in 1986 and 1987.
