Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. E. Boyd Smith (illustrator). 1st Edition. Mary Hunter Austin (the "Austin" came about after her 1891 marriage) is probably best known for her first book, "The Land of Little Rain" (1903), an intimate series of sketches on the desert of California, its nature, its landscape and the Native Americans she came across while exploring there. "The Lands of the Sun" is more or less the same thing, but for Southern California, between San Diego and Monterey. Not to be confused with a book called "California: The Land of the Sun", published in 1914 in which Mary wrote descriptions to go with the paintings of Sutton Palmer. This book has a two-color frontispiece by Elmer Boyd Smith and cute little sketches at the beginning of each section (uncredited, but likely by Elmer too). This copy is very good. It has a slight lean and the edges and endpapers are just a tad browned. Nice copy. JS. Seller Inventory # 002573

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. First Edition. Author was one of the first nature writers to write about Southern Califronia and the Southwest. This book is about Southern California, the lands between San Diego and Monterey and was written many years after she first arrived in California in 1888. By the time she wrote this book, Mary Austin believed SoCal had changed permanently for the worst. Previous owner name and stamp on front pastedown. Binding tight. Both ends of spine very gently bumped. Rear board is damaged at the top edge and a bit below with some loss of cloth, possibly caused by a rodent. Page edges slightly age soiled. Text is clean.
