About the Author: Dorothy S. Strickland, the State of New Jersey Professor of Reading, Rutgers University, was formerly the Arthur I. Gates Professor of Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. A former classroom teacher and learning disabilities specialist, she has authored and edited numerous publications including THE ADMINISTRATION AND SUPERVISION OF READING PROGRAMS, EMERGENT LITERACY, and PROCESS READING AND WRITING: A LITERATURE-BASED APPROACH. She has received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from both Kean College of New Jersey and New York University, as well as the 1994 Rewey Bell Inglis Award as Outstanding Woman in Education given by the Women in Literature and Literacy and the National Council of Teachers of English. Dr. Strickland is past president of the International Reading Association and has been elected to the IRA Reading Hall of Fame.
