One of the best and most vivid accounts of the Arctic convoys, this documents the loss of HMS Edinburgh after a gallant action with convoy PQ14. It is valuable also for its coverage of the privations of the survivors, an aspect of Arctic warfare not often mentioned. The author survived the sinking of the brand-new cruiser HMS Trinidad, lost in the same waters only a few days later (see his story of that action in 'The Ship that torpedoed Herself ', 1975).
