Ships in a box, quickly & w/care. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SYNOPSIS & HISTORY: Last Exit to Brooklyn emerged from the post-war New York literary underground as an uncompromising exploration of urban alienation, institutional neglect and human vulnerability along the Brooklyn waterfront. Hubert Selby Jr. built a raw, polyphonic portrait of dockworkers, street gangs, drag queens, prostitutes and factory laborers enduring the realities of the industrial blocks of Sunset Park around the Brooklyn Army Terminal during the 1950s. Rather than adhering to conventional narrative distance, the text uses a propulsive, jazz-inflected syntax punctuated by typewriter forward slashes and phonetic street dialect to place the reader inside the psychology of characters surviving on the margins. Grove Press published the work in New York in 1964. Its six interconnected sections had circulated in part through avant-garde periodicals including Black Mountain Review, New Directions No. 17, Provincetown Review, Kulchur and Swank before publisher Barney Rosset acquired the manuscript. Graphic designer Roy Kuhlman created the jacket typography. Selby developed these linked novellas over several years following a prolonged recovery from tuberculosis contracted in the merchant marine, drawing encouragement from the writer Gilbert Sorrentino to translate his observations of dockside Brooklyn into fiction. Publication in 1964 placed the book at the center of the era's debates over free speech, culminating in a 1966 to 1968 trial in the United Kingdom that reshaped censorship law under the Obscene Publications Act. Hubert Selby Jr. (1928-2004) is a central figure in twentieth-century American transgressive and realist fiction, and the work is read today across post-war American literature, urban realism and censorship history.…

DOMESTIC SHIPPING:

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING:

All international orders include tracking and insurance. Expedited orders generally ship via USPS, DHL or Priority Mail International depending on the destination. Consolidated shipping is usually via Asendia or a similar, reliable carrier.
