He wrote novels and travelogues based on his experiences travelling around Europe. As a genre, Lavengro falls between a memoir and novel. A classic of nineteenth century literature, it follows the son of an officer who after serving an apprenticeship as a lawyer, becomes a Grub Street Hack, allowing him to observe London low-life.
