Elder Merrill J. Bateman is a member of the presidency of the First Quorum of the Seventy and has served as president of Brigham Young University. He was called as a Seventy in June 1992 and as Presiding Bishop in April 1994. A former dean of the BYU College of Business, Elder Bateman received a doctorate in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been the owner of two management companies, and served as a business consultant to nations in West Africa. He and his wife, Marilyn, are the parents of seven children.
