Virtually created a new anatomy of the eye. Among his numerous discoveries are the anterior elastic lamina of the cornea (Bowman's membrane) and the ciliary muscle, as well as many surgical procedures, such as those for ptosis, lacrimal disorders, and formation of an artificial pupil.
