About this Item
Leeds, Lewis W. (1829-96). Lectures on ventilation: Being a course delivered in the Franklin Institute, of Philadelphia, during the winter of 1866-67. [4], 60pp. 2 color plates. New York: John Wiley & Son, 1869. 229 x 147 mm. Original green printed paper boards, cloth backstrip, spine faded, light edgewear, text block split in one or two places but still sound. Very good. First Edition of one of the first guidelines on building ventilation strategies, in its attractive original binding featuring a remarkable layered text design quite unusual for a scientific book of this period. "The writing in these guidelines is crystal clear, and they contain fabulous color crayon illustrations based on the physics of room air circulation understood from experience at the time . . . His lectures were a response to the death rate assigned to foul air in large East Coast cities of the USA in the late nineteenth century. These deaths and the health concerns they prompted are considered the beginning of ventilation science" (Passe and Battaglia, Designing Spaces for Natural Ventilation [web]). .
