This volume covers the operations of the Army of Northern Virginia from and including the Battle of Gettysbury (July 1-4, 1863), the aftermath of the loss and restructuring of the army and further events until the final surrender at Appomattox in April, 1865, with special emphasis on how leadership and command actually work and orders are carried out.
