Part of the Young Adult Redwall animal fantasy series, that began with REDWALL in 1986. ''UK radio broadcaster (since 1980) and writer. Before beginning to publish fantasy he wrote songs for his own folk group, The Liverpool Fisherman; but he is now known mainly for his fiction, almost all of which is the Young Adult Redwall sequence of animal fantasies: Redwall (1986), Mossflower (1988), which chronologically begins the series, Mattimeo (1989), Mariel of Redwall (1991), Salamandastron (1992), Martin the Warrior (1993) and The Bellmaker (1995). The venue is a landscape with some resemblance to rural England, but in which humans do not appear. The central characters are the mice who inhabit Redwall Abbey, a modest edifice under threat from evil species like stoats, rats, weasels and foxes. The various protagonists fluctuatingly display human characteristics, and wear clothes, bringing individual stories very close to beast fable. Echoes of Kenneth Grahame's strategies (and of his association of good nad eil with particular species) are very clear. The author's only non-series book, Seven Strange & Ghostly Tales (1991), is a collection of ghost stories''. Fine copy in a fine (full colour wraparound Fangorn) dustjacket.…

Review
As deftly executed as all the other Redwall books, The Legend of Luke is a truly magnificent, rampaging, rip-roaring adventure story that gives the heart and mind the kind of aerobic workout normally reserved for a sprint round a playing field. From the very first page the readers know they're in for a treat, and as Jacques skillfully builds his story, cleverly interweaving intricate, imaginative detail with a vast cast of incredible characters who each play a vital role in the unfurling of the tale, there can be no doubt that he is still the true master of his genre.
Excellent as a stand-alone read for anyone new to Redwall, and even better as part of the amazing saga that has captured the imagination of millions since its inception, The Legend of Luke is an absolute must-read for anyone--young or old--who likes their fiction fast and fantastical. This story will certainly leave them breathless for more. --Susan Harrison
