Few state issues have attracted as much controversy and national attention as the application of the death penalty in Texas. Jon Sorensen and Rocky Pilgrim use a wealth of information gathered from formerly confidential prisoner records and a variety of statistical sources to test and challenge traditional preconceptions concerning racial bias, deterrence, guilt, and the application of capital punishment in this state. Jon Sorensen is Professor of Justice Studies at Prairie View A&M University. He has written extensively on capital punishment and served as an expert witness in capital murder trials.

Rocky Leann Pilgrim is a practicing attorney who focuses on family and consumer law. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Downtown, where she teaches courses in criminal justice.
