[DOUGLAS, John?]. A Letter Addressed to Two Great Men on the Prospect of Peace; And on the Terms Necessary to be insisted upon in the Negociation. London: A. Millar, 1760. 1st ed. [4], 56pp. Some soiling to outer leaves and edges; tear in first leaf; else a very good untrimmed copy, sewn as issued. Howes L-276. Sabin 20684. ESTC N61430. Predicts British victory in the Seven Years War and urges the statesmen to negotiate a favorable treaty with the terms that much of French Canada (including Quebec, Nova Scotia, Louisbourg, and Cape Breton Islands) become British territory. Evans 8585 (Boston edition of the same year): "The two great men were William Pitt and the Duke of Newcastle. The tract has also been attributed to `Junius.' But was manifestly inspirited by William Pulteney, Earl of Bath, and written by his chaplain, John Douglas." Sabin says it was "written, doubtless under the direction of his patron, the Earl of Bute." Douglas (1721-1807), the Bishop of Salisbury, was a pamphleteer for Pulteney but was also an active man of letters under his own steam. Among other efforts, he assisted Samuel Johnson in the Cock Lane ghost affair and edited Captain Cook's journals.
