Upper wrapper title; at head of title: 16 (in brackets). Includes correspondence from J. L. Skinner and George Dowson, in addition to Meigs' introductory letter to Speaker of the House Philip P. Barbour; dated January 7, 1823 ('Read, and ordered to lie upon the Table' -- upper wrapper). The Cumberland Road was the first national road in the United States; begun in 1811, it eventually extended from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois (now part of the interstate system, Washington, DC to Los Angeles, CA). Meigs (1764-1824), Connecticut-born Ohio pioneer and politician; served several positions in the territorial and state government of Ohio (including chief justice of the state supreme court, 1803-04); US Senator (1808-10; 1812-14); US Postmaster General (1814-23).
