Corners, spine and boards rubbed and bumped. Mild discoloration to boards. Mild blistering to rear board. Edges and end papers dust dulled. Two stamps on front free end paper (Wheeler Bookstall Price / Issue 18 Nov. 91). There is a losely inserted Indian Telegraph strip paper. The telegraph is dated 18-12-91 and addressed to Meerut. Provenance: From the Library of Sir Alan Francis Brooke, Field Marshal Alanbrooke, 1st Viscount Alanbrooke. The book was most likely purchased first by Victor Brooke, since Alan Brooke did not travel to India until November 1906. Victor Brooke was an older brother of Alan Francis Brooke, who served as Military Secretary to Viceroy of India, Lord Minto. He was killed early during the second world war. First edition. Kipling's series of 19 articles describing the author's November 1887 journey to the Princely States of Rajasthan (then Rajputana). Kipling had not granted permission for book publication of these letters first published in the PIONEER and PIONEER MAIL, and he consequently insisted on the suppression of this edition and its London counterpart. The edition consisted of one thousand copies, and a significant portion (900, according to some sources) of that edition was destroyed.
