Frederike Charlotte Luise, Baroness of Riedesel (1746 Ð 1808) traveled to America from Germany in 1777 to join her husband, who was the commander of the Hessian army Ñ about 30,000 German soldiers hired by the British to fight on their side during the American War of Independence Ñ all the way up until the defeat of the British and German forces at Saratoga. Frederike returned to Germany in 1783 and wrote this account of her life in America and her experiences during the war, including her care of injured soldiers and her help preparing food for the army. The present work is a valuable record of a foreign womanÕs role in the War of Independence that centers not around the logistics of battle but around the human experiences that ran beneath the surface of the conflict.
