Spines slighly rolled. Top & bottom spine frayed with some damage. Some volumes (i, vi & vii) with scrapes on cloth binding. Corners bumped on some volumes (i, ii, iv) gently bumped on others. Gentle foxing thoughout whole volumes. Small discloured stain on volume vi near right-hand fore-edge. Very small white stains on volume vii fore-edge. Volume viii has a few small holes in bottom back cover.; Complete nine volume set. Illustrations by Sir John Gilbert, George Cruikshank & R. Dudley, each volume with wood engravings in text & eight page plates, four in colour, Original dark green cloth binding with ornate gilt blind stamping & gilt lettering in classic Victorian Trade binding. Cover depicts blindstamped design incorporating floral patterns & border in black blind stamping & gilt design showing profile of William Shakespeare surrounded by laurel wreath, outward radiating sunburst lines & decorative star details at corner. Gilt symbolic motifs depicted showing comic & tragic theatre masks, cup of knowledge with serpent & sword and cornucopia. Spine gilt designs show star pattern repeated as well as circular phrase "He Was Not for an Age, but for All Time" [Quoted by Shalespeare's contemporary Ben Jonson] as well as black blind stamp floral patterns repeated. Publisher name blind gilt stamped at bottom of spine . Gilt fore-edges.
