A very good copy in 3/4 red leather on marbled boards Some modest scuffing on boards and edges Front spine is beginning to split but overall the book is still tight and sound, albeit a bit bowed All 25 illustration plates are present The text is clean, however there is age darkening, particularly on edges of plates A very scarce title, especially in such good condition No doubt helped by its life in the library of a wealthy owner Provenance: It appears to have been custom bound for the noted Philadelphia businessman, Rodman Wanamaker, (see below) whose personal bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown Henry Cockton (1807 â " 1853) was an English novelist, remembered primarily for The Life and Adventures of Valentine Vox, the Ventriloquist His third novel, George St George Julian The Prince was intended to expose financial corruption, fraud and forgery In the course of his misadventures the eponymous hero encounters several rogues and cheats, including the historical Gregor MacGregor, the self-styled Cazique of Poyais The publisher collapsed before Henry Cockton had received any payment for George StJulian, and he was effectively bankrupted, being imprisoned for debt, but being released after declaring himself an insolvent debtor Lewis Rodman Wanamaker (1863 â " 1928) was an American businessman and heir to the Wanamaker's department store fortune In addition to operating stores in Philadelphia, New York City, and Paris, he was a patron of the arts, of education, of golf and athletics, of Native American scholarship, and of early aviation He served as a presidential elector for Pennsylvania in 1916, and was appointed Special Deputy Police Commissioner of New York City under Richard Enright in February 1918 In this capacity, he founded the world's first police aviation unit and oversaw reorganization of the New York City Reserve Police Force In 1916, Wanamaker originated the proposal for the Professional Golfers' Association of America 270 pp. Seller Inventory # AA1243
