First edition. Octavo. Bound in the publisher?s deluxe binding of half black morocco, lettered and decorated gilt to the spine. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 39 engraved plates by Phiz. All edges marbled; marbled endpapers. All plates present as issued. As commonly encountered in early Dickens first editions, the engraved plates?including the frontispiece?show scattered to moderate foxing, while the text pages remain clean and light. A very good copy, joints and hinges professionally repaired. PROVENANCE: Armorial bookplate of George Jacob Bosanquet (1791?1866) to front pastedown.
First issued in monthly parts between 1838 and 1839, Nicholas Nickleby represents one of Dickens?s early successes in the Victorian serial publishing market.
