Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine condition blue boards with gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Acknowledgments, Notes and Index. Foreword by Rick Warren. "Explosive in its impact. The truths in this book are foundations on which you can build a meaningful life of purpose." - From the Foreword by Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life "Is Death the End? Or, as bestselling author Dinesh D'Souza argues, do the latest discoveries in physics and neuroscience, the most convincing philosophical deductions, and the most likely conclusions from anthropology and biology lend increasing credibility to the prospect of life after death?" "[The book] presents a reasoned, scientifically based case that life after death is more than possible, it is highly probable. Indeed it has far more evidence on its side than atheistic arguments about death marking our complete and utter extinction. In a stunning tour de force, D'Souza reveals: How modern science lays the groundwork for a science-based belief in life after death; The distinctions between mind and brain - and why it is perfectly reasonable to assume that your immaterial consciousness can survive the dissolution of your material body; The great atheist philosopher who provided one of the most ingenious proofs for the likelihood of an afterlife; How the theory of evolution, far from undercutting the idea of life after death, supports it; The evidence of Near Death Experiences - what it tells us, what it doesn't; Why the Christian view of the afterlife is the most compelling and best suits the evidence; What the probability of life after death means for our lives before death." "Provocative, and combining a mastery of the arguments from philosophy, physics, and biology with an incisive analysis of how the world's major religions have viewed the afterlife, D'Souza shows why we can expect that what Shakespeare called the "undiscovered country" will be discovered by us all.". Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Forbes, Sukey (photography); Malvre, Kersti (photography) (illustrator). 1st Edition. Fine condition lavender boards with silver spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Dedication. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Signed and inscribed by Sukey Forbes in thin black Sharpie at the bottom of the full title page. "When Sukey Forbes loses her six-year-old daughter, Charlotte, to a rare genetic disorder, life as she knows it is shattered. Devastated as she is, though, Forbes knows her own life is not over, and she searches for ways to both come to terms with her daughter's death and recover a full, meaningful life for herself and her family. In her journey from despair to hope and comfort, Forbes struggles with her vulnerabilities as she chafes against the emotional reserve and strict self-reliance that are the hallmarks of her distinguished New England heritage. Yet her family history is also rich with spiritual seekers - including her great-great-great grandfather Ralph Waldo Emerson and his enigmatic wife, Lidian, who also lost a child to high fever at a young age. The Forbes family archives hold records of ancestors who believed in reincarnation and studied mysticism, and apparitions have long been a familiar sight at their home on the private island of Naushon, off Cape Cod. The "afterlife" takes on a new meaning, however, after Forbes seeks out a prominent medium who connects her with Charlotte on the other side. Forbes finds reassurance that Charlotte was never truly gone but rather is on a different part of the continuum of life and death. These experiences help her overcome the austerity of her WASP upbringing and ease once more into life, aware of all it might have in store for her and determined to not just survive but thrive. The Angel in My Pocket is an empowering and enlightening look at one woman's complicated and uncommon route through grief. With unflinching honesty and hard-won wisdom, Forbes tells a powerful story of rediscovering life by discovering the afterlife, coping with the pain of loss, and recapturing the joy of living." - from the inner front jacket flap. "What do we do when the unthinkable happens? We have choices, of course. We can break, become tough, allow cynicism to seep into all our broken places. Or, as Sukey Forbes illustrates in this remarkable book, grief can kick the door wide open and let the light in. [The book] is a devastating and beautiful paean to the human spirit." - Dani Shapiro, author. "How do we bear the unbearable? In this heartbreaking book, a bereaved mother offers an unflinching account of the different ways we grieve and the different - and surprising - ways we may begin to heal." - George Howe Colt, author. "I was raised in the Boston area and this book brought back memories of my childhood. I loved the line in [the book] that says 'how important it is to let all the unimportant stuff go." - Temple Grandin, author. "If your life has ever come to a halt, if you have wondered how to want to live again, if you are looking for hope and longing for courage in the face of grief, if you seek staunch honesty and are keen to hear it from someone who knows firsthand that privilege does not protect you from pain, read this book and know that you are not alone." - Laura Munson, author. "The Angel in My Pocket is one mother's response to that most visceral question that haunts the bereaved: Where has she gone? With spiritual curiosity and tenacious love, Sukey charts a heartfelt journey that grants grief its peaceful landing on a far shore." - Nichole Bernier, author. Signed by Author(s). Classic sky blue w/orange titles and red ankh cover design with Holzer portrait and summary at back panel. Near fine first in near very good original wrapper. Why is it that the dead cannot stay away from the living? Holzer answers and presents first-hand evidence for the survival of the human personality after death. From wrapper summary: "Why is it those departed often cannot stay away from the living? How can one communicate with them? Is it wrong? What are some of the pitfalls to avoid when attempting a clear vision of the deceased; and an untroubled reception of messages from beyond? And what is the difference between wishful self-delusion and actual experience? Author and para-psychologist Hans Holzer answers these questions and scores more in these authentic case histories. He provides first hand evidence for the survival of the human personality after 'death.' Hans tells of his contact with famed psychometrist Florence Sternfels a week after her passing; of the Pennsylvania youngster who appeared to his family after committing suicide rather than be sent to Vietnam; of the post-mortem message from actress Vivien Leigh which was received through medium Sybil Leek before Miss Leigh's death had been discovered; of the Michigan student who reached out from the grave to protect his girlfriend; of the M. D. who was visited and warned of impending danger by her departed father; and, dozens of other recent and thoroughly researched American cases where the dead have, by event, coinciding happening, word, or appearance, interacted with the living! Hans Holzer pays particular attention to the mechanics of communication, and each is completely documented as to circumstance, witness's, and potential alternative explanations. In the end, the challenge of whether or not life after death does exist is answered in the affirmative - not philosophically or with faith as basis, but after the gathering of solid evidence. This volume is a uniquely valuable, complete evaluation of the nature of the non-physical world." At the time of publication in 1969, Holzer had been the author of eleven best-selling works on paranormal phenomenon and was soon to present a tv series on extra sensory perception for syndication. He had lectured at many universities, was a member of the College of Psychic Science in London, and the Director of the New York Committee for the Investigation of Paranormal Occurrences. Contents: "One: What is Life and What is Death?; Two: Channels of Communication; Three: True Communications from the Dead; Four: The Dead Reach Out to the Living: Five: Unfinished Business; Six: The Dead Help the Living; Seven: The Evidence for Survival After Death; Eight: How the Living May Make Contact with the Dead; Nine: The Laws of the Non-Physical World; Ten: How to Prepare for Life After Death; Eleven: In Parting." Printed in the United States of America. 175 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall. Book. Seller Inventory # 022330

[Jaggard, p. 497] AN INTERESTING NOTE ABOUT WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: Shakespeare retired to his hometown of Stratford in Warwickshire, sometime between 1611 and 1613. At the time of his death in April, 1616, he was known around London as a very good actor and playwright, but his poems and plays had not been written down or marketed by booksellers - after all, the vast majority of citizens then were illiterate. His death notice in the parish registry listed him as "Gentleman" not as poet or playwright. Indeed, even Shakespeare himself had no inkling that future generations would revere him as having produced the greatest literature in the English language. Most of his works might have been lost forever, if his business partners and fellow actors John Heminges and Henry Condell had not collaborated to publish 750 copies of the First Folio in 1620-23. The First Folio of 1623 was sold throughout England and parts of Europe and the Second, Third and Fourth Folios followed in 1632, 1664 and 1685 respectively. Although Shakespeare's reputation was on the rise, by 1750, his work had not yet been generally accepted as great literature, nor had it been recognized that the later Folios had strayed from the urtext, which was assembled by Heminges and Condell. There was no Fifth Folio, nor any reprints of the first four folios. In 1709, the second stage in Shakespeare's literary resurrection began, with the publication of Nicholas Rowe's multivolume octavo edition of the plays. In his dedication, Rowe states: "I have taken some care to redeem [Shakespeare] from the injuries of former impressions. I must not pretend to have restor'd this work to the exactness of the Author's original manuscripts: These are lost, or at least, are gone beyond any inquiry I could make so that there was nothing left, but to compare the several editions, and give the true readings as well as I could from thence." The most recent sale of a First Folio was in October, 2020 - Christie's Auction fetched a price of $10 million. Seller Inventory # 09640
