SWINFORD HIGH SPOT FIRST EDITION in tan cloth in dust jacket; 44 illustrations and maps (listed); edited by noted western historian Robert M. Utley; Yale Press Americana Series, 30; 302pp. Very Good+ with bumping at head/tail and small white mark on spine, in Very Good- dust jacket that has some edge wear with sun fading (typical of this dust jacket). The Barnitzes' letters, as well as their diaries, provide a vivid picture of what everyday life was like in the old army, both in garrison and in the field. Includes General Sully Expedition and the Battle of the Washita, where Albert Barnitz was nearly killed by an Indian warrior's bullet. Dowd #3040. Swinford #15. O'Keefe #114. A very nice collectible first edition.
