Item description from seller

Life and Letters of Stonewall Jackson By Mary Anna Jackson, Wife of General Thomas J. Jackson Harper & Brothers, New York, 1891 Illustrated A fascinating 1891 illustrated copy of Life and Letters of General Thomas J. Jackson, better known as Stonewall Jackson, written by his wife, Mary Anna Jackson. This book has a particularly interesting Tennessee historical association. The name "Rebekah Senter" is penciled inside the book. The handwriting appears to closely correspond with handwriting attributed to Rebekah Senter in material preserved in the Rebekah Senter Collection of the Tennessee State Museum. Rebekah Dodson Senter was a Tennessee educator and Army nurse whose life and collection have been documented by the Tennessee State Museum. She was born in 1892 and therefore could not have owned the book when it was originally published in 1891. However, she could have acquired this copy later in her life. The book is therefore offered as a POSSIBLE REBEKAH SENTER ASSOCIATION COPY, rather than as a definitively proven ownership copy. The Tennessee State Museum has documented Rebekah Senter and her collection on their website. BOOK Life and Letters of Stonewall Jackson was written by his wife, Mary Anna Jackson, and provides a personal account of Stonewall Jackson's life, correspondence and career. The book is illustrated and is an important nineteenth century source relating to one of the most prominent figures of the American Civil War. CONDITION Original binding. The book remains attractive despite the condition issues described below. The original cover has substantial wear and staining. The original gilt lettering and decoration are still present and visible. The lower corner of the book has suffered a significant impact. This has caused warping to the affected corner of both the front and rear covers and has resulted in wrinkling to the pages in the same area. There is staining to the front cover. The name "Rebekah Senter" is penciled inside the book. No other writing or significant markings have been noted. The binding and text remain intact and the book is still an attractive and highly interesting historical volume. Slight forward skew to cover / binding, and some wear to hinge. Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the cover, damaged corner, pages and Rebekah Senter inscription. A beautiful and historically fascinating nineteenth century book, combining Civil War history, Stonewall Jackson, Tennessee history and a possible connection to the documented Rebekah Senter Collection of the Tennessee State Museum. The Rebekah Senter connection is offered as a possibility based on the inscription and apparent handwriting similarity. No claim is made that the ownership has been independently authenticated.

Store description

Driven by a lifelong passion for rare books and the stories they carry, I specialize in curating historically significant works that illuminate the evolution of human thought — from early science and natural philosophy to exploration, conservation, and cultural heritage. My interest lies not only in the rarity of the object, but in its ability to teach, inspire, and connect us to the past. My catalog includes antiquarian books, early printed works, manuscripts and treatises from the 18th and 19th centuries, with a focus on natural history, science, exploration, and the preservation of the natural world. I'm especially drawn to works that document the early scientific imagination — from botanical studies and anatomical treatises to philosophical texts that predate modern scientific methods. You’ll also find books and ephemera related to wilderness exploration, wildlife studies, environmental stewardship, and the history of the American landscape, including materials on Southern Americana and the development of the U.S. National Parks. As someone based in Tennessee, I carry a deep respect for the region’s natural and cultural history, often reflected in my selections. I have a particular interest in provenance — volumes with notable ex-libris, inscriptions, marginalia, and ownership histories that offer a second layer of narrative. These marks of human connection and intellectual legacy are, to me, as valuable as the texts themselves. Each book I offer is part of my ongoing education — and my goal is to pass that learning on. Whether you’re a private collector, institutional buyer, or fellow enthusiast, I look forward to helping you discover works that are not only rare, but meaningful.
