The main purpose of this work was to present the record of Stanton in relation to the Civil War, and to make the place in history to which his services to the country entitle him. Stanton died in 1869, when the passions of the War and Reconstruction were perhaps at their highest. His story, therefore, is as stormy as the period in which he gave the Nation his greatest service.
