Towards the end of Stevenson's life, Balfour moved to live near his cousin in Vailima, Samoa, writing this biography after his death.Volume I is illustrated with a frontispiece, and one plate.Volume II is illustrated with one folding map.Collated, complete.Gift inscription to the recto of the front endpaper of Volume I, gifted from Colin Richard Keppel to his daughter Marie in 1915. Colin was Extra Equerry to four kings, and Marie went on to marry the 6th Earl of Romney, Charles Marshall.Bookplate of Scottish bibliophile Alexander Stone to the front paste downs.From the library of W. A. Foyle at Beeleigh Abbey. William Foyle was the co-founder of Foyles bookshop, founding the leading bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex, which became home to his library, one the largest private libraries in England. In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards, bound by Hatchards. Externally, smart, leather is a little rubbed to the spines and extremities. Light marks to the boards and spines. Small crack to the tail of the front joint of Volume I. Spots to the fore edges. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Gift inscription to the recto of the front free endpapers.
