The Bowdoin educated Reed was a member of Congress from Maine from 1877 to 1899 and was Speaker of the house for much of the 1890s. From the preface: The great questions before the country while Thomas Reed was in Congress were the Southern and race issues, the Greenback and silver questions, the procedure of the House (and especially obstruction), and civil service reform and the settlement of the monetary standard. The rules changes made by Reed made him the most important politician you ve never heard of according to a 2011 NPR report. McCall had access to Reed s personal papers in writing this biography. Scarce. Dark blue cloth covered boards, gilt lettering is bright on the cover shows some fading on spine. Pinky finger sized abrasion on front board with scattered water spots. Wear just beginning at corners head and tail. Text block clean bright. Binding square and tight, just starting at gutters at paste-downs. Discoloration on front paste-down appears to be acid transfer from paper left inside cover at some point. Prominent finger smudge on blank page prior to index. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
