First Edition. Engraved frontis portrait, 2 facsimile plates (one folding); [ii], 467 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. A life of scholar, printer, librarian, and "Scotland's formost Latinist" (ODNB) Thomas Ruddiman. His RUDIMENTS was the standard 18th-century Latin grammar and while keeper to the Advocates' library he acquired an "unrivalled collection of early Scottish books" (ODNB). He was also a fierce Jacobite, engaging his press and his pen in various pamphlet wars. This LIFE, by noted economist George Chalmers, includes a list of works from Ruddiman's press. Later half calf and green boards; front joint starting. Bookplates of A.N.L. Munby and Hugh W. Young. 2 pp of annotations in pencil to recto of ffep and first (binder's) blank in modern hand.
