London: Printed for Henry Colburn, 1824. First Edition. A very nice 2 volume set of the life and times of the Italian Baroque painter Salvator Rosa (1615-73). Full leather binding with red and green title labels with gilt titles, one of the green title labels is chipped and has a hole to the centre. Lady Morgan was a popular novelist, poet, and travel writer and this work was the first biography of a foreign painter to appear in English. It has been criticised for its uncritical acceptance of romantic myths about Rosa, but it is a substantial work which makes significant use of unpublished primary source materials, and it was a popular work which influenced the development of Rosa's reputation in Britain. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition slightly rubbed and faded, gilt titles on red labels, gilt volume numbers on green labels, 5 raised gilt bands dividing 6 compartments, 4 of which have gilt decoration, there is a small piece of the green label missing on Vol. I, faded. Joints good condition gently rubbed. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition maroon leather with gilt lines around the edges and a blind tooled design inside the gilt, there is a mark to the front board of Vol. I. Page edges good condition top edge slightly darkened, all edges marbled. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition marbled. End papers good condition marbled Title good condition both volumes title pages are tanned and Vol. I is also foxed.
