Over the course of many books, in many genres, produced in untold editions, one might find that Irving exhibited abundant talent, but perhaps not genius; that he was able to transcribe his keen insight, but it was clouded by romanticism. In sum, he was a man of his times, and as one of America's first literary stars, Irving created a foundation that allowed Hawthorne, Melville and their peers to flourish.Dust jackets are now protected in removable, clear archival sleeves.
