*** BOOK this is a bound edition of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, volume XLVII for January 1891, and consists of the Kipling story pp1-97 and 50 pp of shorter pieces. There were four versions of this, Kipling's first novel, this one has the happy ending ; the eventual standard edition is quite a bit longer ans has a sad ending. It is strongly bound with brown boards with gilt title on spine. The upper board is slightly scuffed. Frontispiece steel engraving of the author by V Grubeyedoff. This was the first novel of KIpling's to be published.
