Fine. Overall, a sleek and striking copy. One of the first gangster novels, Little Caesar traces the rise and fall of an ambitious Chicago criminal, Caesar Enrico Bandello. Two years after the book was published, it was adapted into a film of the same name, which ushered in the gangster film craze of the early 1930s and established actor Edward G. Robinson as a star. W. R. Burnett had a long and successful career as a novelist and screenwriter. Two of his other books, High Sierra (1940) and Asphalt Jungle (1949), were also adapted into important gangster films, and he contributed to the screenplays of acclaimed gangster films Scarface (1931) and This Gun for Hire (1942).
