Grade 2-5-- This book begins with a picture-book story, told in staid present tense prose, of three little pigs looking for something to do on a rainy day. They decide to make puppets. There are then several pages of instructions on making puppets, stages, and scenery, as well as tips on everything from scripts to tickets, before returning to the slight story that ends with the pigs presenting a play. The instructions for puppet making, numbered and set off in a box, are adequate, if rather uninspiring. Unfortunately, Watson does not stop with basic instructions. Each page is cluttered with extra instructions and asides that fill the margins. Children old enough to use the book as a guide will be put off by the too-cute picture-book format. Old classics, such as Nancy Renfro's Puppets for Play Production (Funk & Wagnals, 1969; o.p.), are far more effective in encouraging children to explore puppetry creatively. --Karen James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY
