About this Item
Dedicated "to the preservation of our wild creatures,'' this book contains "a true account of the doings of five quadrupeds & three birds, and, in elucidation the same, over 200 drawings" by the author, in pen and ink, appearing as small sketches to a majority of pages, + 31 full-page drawings throughout text. A renowned conservationist, wildlife artist, & author, who would become one of the founding members of the Boy Scouts of America, this work was published while he was still using the hyphenated version of his name & serving as a naturalist to the government of Manitoba. In 360 deckled-edge pages, it contains stories about animals who live in constant fear of being hunted, all based on true accounts of animals he had known. A true FIRST EDITION, First Printing (impression) from 1901, this hardcover small octavo has rich green-brown cloth-covered boards stamped with a green decoration of wildlife amidst trees to front, with gilt border stamped around edges & gilt lettering to front & spine. Condition is VG+: exceptionally clean & bright, with some external fading & scattered spotting to lower edge of front board. Interior pages are creamy white with mild, even tanning, but completely unmarked save for an old grease pencil number & offsetting to front endpapers.
